Carlos Enrique Estremera was born on 2 September,1958 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. An excellentgrade school student. Motivated by his godparents to study music, he started by singingreligeous hymns.He started in the professional world as apercussionist with a group of musicians thatwas formed in the Barrio Obrero section ofSanturce.
Within a year, he was vocalist withthat group and with the folkloric plena group:Los Pleneros del Quinto Olivo. But hisgreatest opportunity came upon joining theOrchestra Mulenze 76, which had an exclusivecontract with Fania Records.
In 1978, Estremera met Bobby Valentín, whoinvited him to join his band. The first song thathe recorded with Valentín's group was "Laboda de Ella" which won him widespreadacclaim in the world of popular music.
Herecorded six albums with Valentín, includingtwo as a solist. But by the end of 1984, hedecided to leave Valentín to form his ownband.At this new stage, "El Cano", as he wasknown, dedicated himself to singing all genresof popular music.
In 1986 he won the Paoliaward as Salsa Vocalist of the Year, andother awards. In 1988, Estremera debuted asproducer of his own records with his "Salvaje"album. A year later, he released "Dueño delSoneo" which his new series of recordings.
El Cano, who was born albino, is known in themusic industry as one of the best "soneros",or singer of Afro-Caribbean music, at thecentury. His skills were demonstrated at anow famous concert in Guánica, where hesand 105 consecutive stanzas withoutrepeating a single phrase.
Quite anacheivement. In that same year, hisimprovisation skills were put to the test againand produced 128 unique "soneos" for theconcert fans in Yabucoa, while a few weekslater, before 5,000 spectators at a concert inJuana Díaz, he increased that number to 130.
With a honed skill in improvising without par,Estremera has won the epithet of "owner ofthe soneo"; a title that has virtually replacedthe "golden kid" by which he was initiallyknown, and which was used in the title of twoof his recordings.
His hit album Dueño delSoneo, Vol. 1, included salsa tracks such as Por Si Acaso and more. There was alsoDueño del Soneo, Vol. 2 and Exitos delDueño del Soneo.Among his musical hits, Estremera is bestknown for songs such as "Las ingratitudes","Manuel García", "Si me caso mejoro", "Lamujer y la primavera", "Me quedé con lasganas", "La novia automática", "Awilda", "Elcompromiso", "Nací y así soy", "Aprovecha lomío" and "Viernes social".
